  • The solar plant had an investment of USD 20 million and generated 200 jobs, with 75% of the labor force from the Sucre region.
  • La Sierpe' has successfully registered for carbon emission reduction certificates.
  • It is the first solar park in the country with bifacial, or two-sided, technology, and in addition to receiving the sun's rays in traditional panels, it will take advantage of the radiation reflected from the ground to be more efficient in energy production.

San Benito Abad, Sucre, January 28, 2022.

With the delivery of the La Sierpe solar power plant this Friday by President Iván Duque, the National Government ratifies its commitment to consolidate Colombia as an attractive country for investment in non-conventional renewable energies, as well as a benchmark in the energy transition as a driver of sustainable development for all of Latin America.

This solar power plant contributes to the fight against climate change by avoiding the emission of 18,118 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere each year, which is the equivalent of planting 9,060 trees.

In addition, 'La Sierpe' has successfully registered for carbon emission reduction certificates. Fifty percent of these revenues will be used to invest in social projects in the project's area of influence, and for one year projects will be identified and defined in conjunction with the community to make these investments.

The solar plant has 65,520 solar panels, extends over 65 hectares and will generate 4,280,000 kilowatt-months, equivalent to the energy consumed by 28,500 households during 30 days, on average, in Colombia.

La Sierpe' had an investment of close to US$20 million and was built in 17 months, starting construction in February 2020, and ending in July 2021, with a 15-year power purchase agreement.

The construction of the solar park generated approximately 200 jobs, 75% of which were local labor.

The project will also earmark 50% of this income for investment in social projects in the area of influence. During one year, projects will be identified and defined together with the community to make these investments.

Also, 'La Sierpe' is the first photovoltaic park connected to the National Interconnection System (SIN) to use the technology known as bifacial (two-sided) panels, accompanied by a single-axis tracking system, thus also taking advantage of the radiation reflected on the ground, and making energy production much more efficient.

The event will be led by President Duque, who will be accompanied by the Minister of Mines and Energy, Diego Mesa Puyo; the Vice President for Latin America of Atlantica Sustainable Infrastructure, Antonio Merino; among other representatives of the national and regional governments.
